Smart Planning

By means of the research agenda – Smart Settlement Systems – the regional knowledge and competence centre RSA Studio iSPACE strives to establish a closer interlinking between science, economy, administration and education in the region of Salzburg. This shall be achieved by varied, yet specific measures and projects in the fields of contract research, application-oriented and basic research as well as experimental development. Apart from that, different translation and transfer activities will be conducted, supported by research and innovation initiatives such as the research network Alpines Bauen.

Smart Settlement Systems builds up on the idea of smart city. Thereby the smart city concept is broken down to smaller spatial entities on the building level, further scaled to the settlement context, the municipal and city level and up to the regional level. In the end, an urban and regional specific usage for the inhabitants shall be achieved (smart living, quality of life), being characterised by a minimised consumption of resources and an intelligent linkage of different smart dimensions (including energy, mobility, infrastructure, and public green space). To succeed in this undertaking, a hybrid congregation of innovative technologies, IT-applications and complex systems associated with smart data is used

Main topics of Smart Settlement Systems encompass the research fields of smart mobility (mobility measurements in the building context, linkage of residential housing locations with regional mobility systems and intermodal/ alternative mobility offers, support of fair and balanced mobility), smart environment (re-densification models, coupling of building land potentials with housing demands, space simulations and resource efficiency), smart energy (further development of energy certificates, total energy demand modelling, holistic energetic solutions and certification of settlements, energy balancing and renewable energies) as well as smart governance (elaboration of new directives and strategies in the context of settlement development, re-densification and refurbishment, integration of public and regional authorities as enablers as well as spatial simulation of new governance measures).
